🛡️ Vaccination Services Available for non-Medicare holders incl. international students

In Australia, institutions still require non-Medicare holders—including international nursing students—to meet specific vaccination guidelines, especially before attending clinical placements. Overseas students starting school in Australia should receive several recommended or required vaccines to protect themselves and others from serious diseases. Here’s a clear breakdown:

🛡️ Mandatory or Strongly Recommended Vaccines

These align with the National Immunisation Program and school-based requirements:

  • Receive two doses of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) to meet standard immunisation requirements.
  • Get a Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (dTpa) booster, especially during adolescence.
  • Take two Varicella (Chickenpox) doses if you haven’t previously contracted the illness.
  • Complete three Hepatitis B doses—international students are strongly encouraged to do so.
  • Receive the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine around age 12–13 (Year 7) as part of school-based programs.
  • Get the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine around age 14–16 (Year 10).
  • Ensure full COVID-19 vaccination before entering Australia—free for all students, even without Medicare.

đź’‰ Optional but Recommended Vaccines

These depend on your living situation and health risks:

  • Influenza (Flu): Highly recommended during flu season.
  • Hepatitis A: Suggested for students from or traveling to high-risk areas.

đź“‹ Proof and Records

  • You’ll need to provide translated vaccination records if they’re not in English.
  • We can add any vaccines you received overseas to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).
  • You can get vaccinated and access your records using an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI), even without Medicare. Full guidance will be provided.

🩺 Core Vaccinations for Nursing Students

These are based on guidelines from institutions like TAFE Queensland and align with the Australian Immunisation Handbook:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (dTpa): One adult dose within the last 10 years.
  • Hepatitis B: Full course plus serology showing immunity (≥10 IU/L).
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): Two doses or positive serology for all three.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox): Two doses or positive serology.
  • Influenza: Mandatory annually, especially before May 1st for aged care placements.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Screening: Required if you’re from or have lived in a high-risk country, or are an overseas student on a visa.
  • Placement providers may still require full COVID-19 vaccination for clinical roles and training.
  • Health authorities may also recommend booster doses depending on local guidelines and risk levels.

đź“‹ Proof of Vaccination Without Medicare

Even if you’re not eligible for Medicare, you can still:

  • Get vaccinated
  • Obtain an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) via myGov to access your digital immunisation history.
  • Ask us vaccination provider to print your Immunisation History Statement

🧪 Additional Notes

  • HIV and Hepatitis C serology may be required for some placements.
  • All documentation must include vaccine brand, batch number, date, and provider details.
  • Translations are needed for any non-English records.

Our nursing team offers expert guidance on vaccine schedules, eligibility, and consent—ensuring timely and safe protection for all age groups. Whether you’re starting a family, planning a trip, or simply staying up to date, Willowglen is your trusted partner in lifelong immunity.
